Dietary Recommendations for People with Irritable Bowel Movement


Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by contractions in the intestine, gastritis, pain in the abdomen, improper bowel movement, and mucus in stool and fluid loss in the bowel.? As IBS is directly related to the stomach and digestion, certain changes in your dietary habits can offer short-term as well as long term relief. IBS differs from person to person, as a result you can select from the following recommendations as per your suitability.


Go for smaller more frequent meals with smaller portions than bigger and heavy ones

– Doing this can make it easier for the digestive system to digest food items at a faster pace, make you feel lighter and reduce bowel contractions.


  • Eat at a slow pace – One should eat slowly chewing each bite at least 10-15 times. This activity reduces the formation of stomach gas and heartburn.

  • Stay hydrated – One should drink 8-10 glasses of water of water daily. Also, include foods which are rich in water such as watermelon, white gourd, and cucumber. Fluids regulate bowel movement and keeps the person active and energetic throughout the day. However avoid alcohol, coffee and other such drinks.

  • Fiber Rich Foods – Fiber intake can pose a problem for people who suffer from IBS as well as chronic diarrhea.  But if the major symptom is constipation, then include fiber rich foods such as grains, cereals, nuts, etc. Fiber helps to get rid of IBS related constipation.

  • Avoid sugar, lactose and fructose – These items trigger IBS and its symptoms in some people.


A good understanding of your symptoms can help tackle the problem in a better manner. For example, certain women experience increased symptoms during their menstrual cycle. However, following the above recommendations can surely help people of all age group with varied symptoms and indications.
