Health Risks Attached to Vitamin-B Deficiency

Vitamin B is actually composed of 8 individual vitamins and all of them need to be obtained from different foods. Vitamin B deficiency can lead to many health ailments such as Fatigue, Memory loss, Insomnia, Anemia, Graying Hair and Depression.


Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 is also called as Thiamin. Thiamin deficiency can cause a host of nervous diseases. The major ones include beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Both of these are nervous diseases and have similar symptoms. Symptoms include low muscle co- ordination, mental anxiety and confusion and nerve degeneration.


Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2’s other name is Riboflavin. Deficiency of Riboflavin can cause a rare disease called ariboflavinosis. The symptoms of this disease include inflammation of the tongue, cracks around the corners of the mouth, inflammation of the eyes, hair loss and skin rashes.


Vitamin B3

The other name is Niacin. Niacin deficiency, also known as pellagra, causes nervous, digestive and skin disorders. A more severe form of pellagra causes dementia, diarrhea and dermatitis. In a mild form, niacin deficiency causes loss of appetite, swelling of the tongue and mental confusion.


Vitamin B5

The deficiency of this vitamin is rare and causes vomiting, loss of appetite and insomnia.


Vitamin B6

Also known as pyridoxine is mainly used to synthesize amino acids. Symptoms of deficiency of Vitamin B6 include depression, insomnia, muscle twitching and convulsions.


Vitamin B7

Vitamin B7, or Biotin, is functionally similar to B6. Biotin deficiency is rare since it is so abundantly widespread. The symptoms that indicate this deficiency include pale skin, muscle disorders, confusion and convulsions.


Vitamin B9

Deficiency of Vitamin B9 can cause folate deficiency which can lead to an increased risk of neural tube defects for the baby.


Vitamin B12

Symptoms indicating this deficiency include tiredness, fatigue, and shortness of breath and vision loss.
