Is Banana a weight loss or weight gain fruit?

Banana is next to mother's milk when it comes to benefits. One banana contains around 105 calories (3 from fat), and around 27 carbs in the form of fruit sugars which offers instant energy by breaking down into glucose.

However amidst fitness lovers there has always been an evolving debate on whether banana contributes to weight loss or weight gain? When you go to a gym with goal of putting on weight, it is not uncommon when your gym trainer prescribes you to have bananas along with egg whites and protein shakes before and after your fitness regime. On the other end for people struggling to lose weight, we have heard enough of the advice that eating a banana can make you stay full for a long time that can prevent you from over indulging and adding on extra flab.  Now which one of them is true?

Though banana provides several weight loss benefits, many continue to believe bananas can also aid in healthy weight gain. Whether your goal is weight loss or weight gain, moderation is the key along with monitoring your daily calories based on your body type. Else consuming too many bananas can also lead to increased weight (1-2 banana every day is absolutely fine). Only when we consume banana is excess, the glucose gets stored in the form of fat. Nino/Baby banana, red banana, plantain banana and Cavendish bananas are some types of bananas that are popularly consumed for weight loss.

  • The low glycemic index in bananas which also helps in weight loss as it does not cause a blood sugar spike, goes easy on your pancreas and decreases risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

  • Serotonin and dopamine levels in bananas, helps to lighten your mood and spirit and makes you feel energetic and optimistic throughout the day. Most importantly it helps to combat stress that prevents increase in cortisol levels that leads to fatigue and weight gain.

  • Vitamin B6 and folic acid in bananas are beneficial to help you lose weight capably.

However, banana should not be consumed when suffering from cough and cold. It should not be taken on empty stomach as this might lead to abdominal problems.
