Is Cinnamon Effective in Bringing Down Blood Sugar Levels?

Updated: Feb 19, 2020

I know of no other natural ingredient that has the power as cinnamon in controlling blood sugar”, Richard Anderson, Ph.D. Researcher, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Cinnamon increases the glucose metabolism by almost 20 times. It contains an element called MHCP (Methyl Hydroxy Chatone Polymer) which diminishes the production of glucose in the body. Cinnamon is also a natural ingredient that reduces high cholesterol levels. Cinnamon contains insulin-like effects and enhances the antioxidant defense. A research study was conducted in 2009 which said "Polyphenols from cinnamon could be of special interest in people who are overweight with impaired fasting glucose since they might act as both insulin sensitizers and antioxidants."

In one study, people consumed ½ tsp of cinnamon to 3 tsp of cinnamon every day for 40 days. The experiment proved that cinnamon was effective in cutting cholesterol by 18% and sugar levels by 24%. The experiment also showed that when people stopped taking cinnamon, the sugar levels started to rise as before. Cinnamon contains Proanthocyanidin, a bioflavonoid which improves the signaling activity of the insulin in the fat cells.

Unlike most other drugs, this does not have any side effects. Just add this in desserts, fruit salads, cereal and vegetable preparation. However, keep in mind that cinnamon can produce heat in the body especially if you live in hot climatic condition or for any other reason. In such a case, you can decrease the intake of cinnamon as per suitability. However, cinnamon should not be consumed by people suffering from liver related issues. Cinnamon can worsen the state.

Recipe

Take 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder with a cup of hot water. In the case of chronic condition, have this 2 times a day.
