Medicinal Properties of The Triphala Fruit

Triphala is one of the most widely accepted and used Ayurvedic herb. It is also one of the oldest and the longest used herb in the world. But do you know why this herb is so widely popular? Well! As per Ayurveda, constipation is the mother of all diseases and Triphala detoxifies the bowels and cures constipation without any harmful side effects. Triphala cleanses the body and aid in regular bowel movement apart from being able to treat a variety of other diseases.

The word ‘Triphala’ means “three fruits”, comprising of Amalaki fruit (Embelica Officinalis/Amla/Indian Gooseberry), Haritaki fruit (Harad/Terminalia Chebula) and Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia Belerica). All these fruits have warming, rejuvenating and balancing effects on all body types (doshas).

Amalika fruit – Also known by the names Amla, Nurse Herb and Indian Gooseberry. It contains vitamin C more than any other fruit, (3,000 mg of vitamin C per piece). Acts as an antibiotic and protect the body from several ailments.


Harad / Terminalia Chebula / Haritaki fruit – It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herb. It helps in weight reduction by removing excess fat. Harad increases the metabolism and balances the complete body.


Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia Belerica) – It is a warming and toning herb.


Medicinal properties of Triphala

For the stomach: A unique property of Triphala is that it is light on the stomach. Triphala is recommended for old age people who have a delicate and sensitive stomach. Few of the scientific studies have proved that Triphala has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidizing and immunity boosting properties. Triphala strengthens the digestive system and the intestine. It removes excess acid formation and gases in the stomach.


Weight-loss: Triphala improves the immunity and appetite of the body and balances the metabolism of the body thereby removing excess fat.


Alzheimer’s disease: This herb is also useful for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease as it calms and tones the nervous system. Triphala also minimizes the level of cholesterol and strengthens the kidney and liver.


Blood count: Triphala herb purifies the blood and increases the hemoglobin level and red blood cell count.


Diabetes: Triphala balances the sugar level. It is also prescribed for arthritis patients.


Eye problems: Triphala cures eye related problems such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis and cataract. It can also be applied externally to heal burns and bruises.


Precaution

Triphala should not be consumed during pregnancy and in the case of dysentery and diarrhea.
