Research Study
A medical research study was undertaken on patients suffering from Carotid Intima-Media thickness. The patients were regularly given pomegranates for 1 year on a daily basis. The study successfully proved that pomegranate decreased the thickness by 30% and lowered blood pressure by 21% and also resulted in a 30% chance of reduction of atherosclerotic plaque. On the other hand, those who are not taking the fruit were observed to have a 9% increased thickness.
Another study included 45 patients with Coronary Heart Disease and Myocardial Infarction. They were grouped in 2 where there were those who were regularly given 8 ounces of Pomegranate Juice for 3 months and those who were not given any pomegranate at all. The study showed that those who regularly drank Pomegranate Juice experienced less ischemia during a stress test while those who did not have record of intake of the juice had increased level of ischemia.
What Makes It Beneficial For The Heart
Pomegranate fruit contains 2 very powerful plant compounds, Punicic Acid and Punicalagins. The Punicic Acid and Punicalagins both have an antioxidant property that prevents harmful chemical reactions in the body and fights free radicals. These free radicals and unwanted chemical reactions cause damage to the heart and the arteries and lead to the formation of plaques. Therefore the antioxidant property of the fruit helps our body in the fight against cardiovascular diseases by reducing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Research studies have proved that pomegranates contain 3 times more antioxidants than green tea or red wine.
Apart from its cardiovascular benefits, the Pomegranate fruits are also effective in the risk reduction of several other ailments such as muscle sores, dental plaques, erectile dysfunction, obesity, cancer, vomiting, heartburn, hemorrhoids, dysentery and trichomonas’s. Daily intake of Pomegranate is recommended for people suffering from high blood pressure and asthma. It also increases memory power and delays ageing.
