Although basil is a native of India, it has grown in popularity overtime and is often used today as a seasoning herb in Indian, Italian and Thai dishes. Basil is a great source of vitamin K, manganese, copper, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, folate, magnesium, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. It belongs to the family of peppermint, hence looks similar to it. With the scientific name Ocimum basilicum, there are more than 60 varieties of basil.

Consumption of 4-5 leaves of basil every day is enough to keep you away from fever and general problems such as cough, asthma, bite and cuts, fever, stress, kidney dysfunction, weak memory, bronchitis, acne, acidity, flu, migraine and any other ailment in general.

Specifically, basil has been considered as a magical herb in curing stress, depression and anxiety.

It is suggested by Ayurveda that even healthy people should have (don't chew) 3-4 leaves of basil leaves twice a day, morning and evening. Basil has unique healing, antiseptic and adaptogenic (anti-stress) properties. Basil leaves contain compounds called flavonoids (Orientin and vicenin). These protect cell structures from radiation and oxygen-based damage. The anti-inflammatory effects of basil come from the fact that basil contains eugenol which has an enzyme-inhibiting effect and healing benefits. Eugenol offers relief for patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowels. Basil protects epithelial cells from free radical damage. Free radical damage leads to serious illness and conditions including asthma, osteoarthritis, and arthritis. Basil contains Beta-carotene which protects the cells from further damage. Basil also contains magnesium which reduces the risk of heart related ailments by improving the blood flow and relaxing the muscles and blood vessels. Basil also has the ability to level out the blood sugar if consumed regularly.

The essential oils in basil have unique anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which restrict the growth of various types of bacteria. One should add fresh basil leaves to foods and salads to ensure additional safety and freshness. Basil also acts as a deterrent.
