Ayurveda is based upon scientific principles of healing and dates back to being more than 5,000 years old. As per Ayurveda, more than half of the illness gets cured because of diet control and management and hence recommends focusing more on diet than medicines. Human body stays healthy when there is a perfect balance and harmony maintained between the five elements of the human body: earth, air, fire, water, and space. Diseases occur either because of vata, pita or kapha doshas (Ayurvedic body types) because of which Ayurveda prescribes different diet plans for Vata, Kapha and Pita patients.
However, there are a few food items which all kinds of patients can have. These are wheat, white gourd, papaya, guava, carrot, cabbage, sapodilla, bitter gourd, sweet lime, green potato, spinach, fenugreek, pomegranate, sprouts, , milk and, apple. Take a note that all of the above is recommended in limited quantity.
Vata dosha
Recommended diet: Fenugreek, carom seeds, ginger and garlic.
Foods to avoid: Rice, kidney beans, cauliflower, potato, cucumber, peas, tomato, dry mango, lemon, oranges, grapes, mango, banana, pickles, curd, buttermilk and foods which contain a lot of vitamin C. One must avoid taking bath with cold water
.
Pita dosha
Recommended diet: Wheat, cold milk, coconut water, figs and sultana currant (munakka).
Foods to avoid: Brinjal, ginger and green chili. One should avoid spicy and deep fried foods.
Kapha dosha
Recommended diet: Dry dates, sultana currant (munakka) and dates boiled with warm milk. Chewing of black pepper is highly recommended. However, if along with kapha disease, one is having a complain of Piles, then one should avoid pepper.
Foods to avoid: Avoid oily and greasy food items. When there is a need to use oil while food preparation, use mustard or sesame oil.
