Side Effects of Cilantro and Who Must Not Consume It


Coriander (scientific term Coriandrum Sativum ) or cilantro as it also commonly referred to as, is a very popular medicinal herb that is added to dishes for flavoring and taste.


Cilantro is used in the treatment of various disorders such as skin inflammation, high cholesterol, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, smallpox, anemia, indigestion, menstrual disorders, skin disorders, diabetes, colon cancer, and eye care. Coriander traditionally, was widely used in certain combinations with other herbs to enhance a person’s libido. However for certain people it is advisable to consume cilantro in limited quantity.


Word of Caution

Coriander is safe for most people when taken in appropriate / limited quantity. There have been very few cases reported on the side-effects of cilantro. One can include cilantro in daily diet but in limited quantity. Every food in this world comes with its pros and cons but the rule says that excessive consumption of anything can prove detrimental. Keep in mind to limit the consumption of cilantro while at the same time enjoy its amazing health benefits.


1. Sunburn: One of the more unusual side effects that some patients complained was with sunlight sensitivity. They said that excessive consumption of cilantro made them more prone to sunburn. Sunburn can subsequently lead to skin cancer in the long run. Some people may experience dermatitis after handling the leaves of coriander or from coming in contact with the oil from the seeds. This side effect of cilantro has been attributed to the presence of acidic compounds in cilantro which makes the skin prone to sunburn. Keep a sunblock handy before moving out in the sun after having cilantro is suggested. It has also been seen to irritate the skin and cause allergy.


2. During Pregnancy: It is advised that pregnant women should not consume cilantro. It is best to consult your doctor before adding coriander to your diet. It has been seen that cilantro hampers the normal functioning of the reproductive gland which can even harm the fetus.


3. Liver Damage: Coriander contains certain volatile essential oils which aid in the proper functioning of liver. But this herb becomes dangerous for the liver when consumed in large quantity. Excessive cilantro in diet increases bile secretion which ultimately leads to harming the liver.


4. Low Blood Pressure: It is advised that people with low blood pressure should take cilantro in limited quantity as excessive intake can further lower down the pressure. The person can also experience nausea, little unconsciousness and mild euphoria.


5. Digestive Disorders: When taken in small quantity cilantro treats gastrointestinal problems. For example Ayurveda suggest that one should have 5 grams of coriander leaves extract in case of upset stomach. A medical study had reported that people who consumed more than 200 ml of cilantro leaves extract in a week experienced high levels of stomach gas, bloating, vomiting and abdominal pain. It has also been seen that high consumption of cilantro can also lead to mind dehydration and diarrhea.


6. Breathing Issues: People who suffer from respiratory issues should keep an eye on the usage of cilantro as this can lead to worsening of asthma, shortness of breath, and lung problems.
