Medical studies have proved that sitting at one position for too long increases the risk of many diseases such as heart attacks, backache, obesity, etc. A study published by the ‘American Journal of Epidemiology’ proved that sitting for long at a stretch, around 6-7 hours a day, increases a person's chances of dying from heart ailments, diabetes and obesity by 18% a s compared to people who sat for less than 3 hours in a day. Off late, medical evidences that prove the harmful effects of sitting for long duration has increased and been validated.
The American College of Cardiology released a finding in January 2015 which said that people who sit for longer durations have increased mortality than people who sit for less time. Scientists at the University of Missouri have found that sitting for long does not let the fat-absorbing enzyme called lipase circulate well in the body and hence leads to the accumulation of fat.
A study which was conducted at the ‘Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana’ proved that people who sit for long hours at a stretch have an increased chance of dying from heart diseases, by around 54%. In this experiment, the lifestyle of 17,000 men and women was observed for over 13 years.
Studies have shown that human have been made to suit standing. Here’s a nice quote from Moshe Feldenkrais: “Indeed, the human body is badly suited for standing. Statues of human figures have to be strongly connected to a heavy base to prevent them from toppling over at the slightest disturbance. The head, the shoulders, the trunk, all the heavy parts, are placed on top, and the base is very small in comparison with the total height. A martian visitor would not hesitate to conclude that the human body is the closest to an ideal frame designed for movement and the least suited for standing motionless.”
If you have a job where it is mandatory for you to sit for 7-8 hours a day, make sure you get up every 1-2 hour, walk for 5 minutes and give your body a light streatch.
