Some people skip meals when they say they don’t have enough time to eat. There are also people who skip meals to starve and lose weight. Skipping breakfast is the worst thing one can do, but skipping other meals are also not healthy. Our body constantly needs a balanced source of nutrients including vitamins, protein and minerals. When we skip meals, we disturb this balance and give way to improper development of the body.
When we skip meals, our blood sugar level drops. Skipping meals do not supply the body with a constant source of energy and make you will feel exhausted and grumpy. This also hampers the emotional functioning of our body which directly impacts the working of our brain. When we skip meals more regularly, our body grabs energy from within the muscle, further detoriating the physical and mental strength.
Going too long without meal puts our body on the survival mode. Eating every day on time makes our body used to nutrition at that very time and prepares the brain for better absorption and digestion. As per the National Institute of Health, when we skip a meal, we feel hungrier at the time of the next meal and tend to grab more calories than usual.
Ayurvedic View
As per Ayurveda, we should fast once a week but even Ayurveda does not suggest dieting at all. It suggests foods that are low in salt and sugar and instead be on a liquid diet; have more of juices, fruits and coconut water.
For people who are aiming to lose weight, skipping meals is just not the right strategy to follow. Instead have foods that make you feel fuller. Some of the foods that contain health fat and essential nutrients are banana, nuts including cashew and almonds, wheat, spinach, apple, carrot and coconut water. If you don’t get enough time to have meals on time, keep these foods handy with you.
To lead a healthy happier life, it is important to have a good lifestyle and skipping meals is not one of them.
