If you want to stay fit for life, you must make small changes in your everyday life. The following changes will surely give you long term benefits and keep you away from general stomach disorders such as constipation, acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion, etc. Try any of these and you will notice big differences in your life.
One should chew each bite of food at least 20-25 times. There is a quote which says "wholesome food in small quantity is the best physician on earth".
While having meals, one should sit in cross legged position and not with legs falling down (dining table position). The reason behind this is that when we are having food, our heart needs to pump more blood to digest and process the food. Keeping our legs down makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood in the direction opposite to gravity. Even after having food we should not lie down and be in a sitting position for 10-15 minutes. This helps in digestion.
Drinking warm water on empty stomach (before brushing your teeth) is highly beneficial. The saliva contains many unique healing properties which cures the body of stomach related and other general ailments. Water or any liquid should be consumed slowly in a sitting position.
As per Ayurveda human body should be on fast once a week. On this day one should only consume fruits and juices. This helps the body to harness the power of enzymes. This method restores health and rejuvenates the body. Basically the whole day without the intake of salt. This method detoxifies the body and it is even effective to problems of indigestion, acne or any skin related issues.
One should have dinner at least an hour before sleeping. This keeps the weight under control and improves the metabolism.
One should drink at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday but drinking water at the right time has even greater benefits: 2 glass of water after waking up which activates internal organs, a glass of water before meal improves digestion, a glass of water before bath lowers blood pressure, a glass of water before sleeping reduces the risk of heart attack. It is best to drink a little warm water along with honey and lemon.
One should always sit while having water or any liquid. Having water while sitting is a healthier practice because this prevents arthritis, guards against GIT damage, prevents kidney damage and calms down the nervous system.
After every meal sitting in Vajrasana yoga pose improves the digestion process. This asana improves the flow of blood in the lower pelvic region, speeds up the digestion process, offers relief in all kinds of stomach related disorders, straightens the back and strengthens the lower back muscles, gives flexibility to the knees and relaxes the mind.
