Most categories of melons such as watermelon, cantaloupe, gaylia, and honeydew are high in carotenoids, bioflavonoids, water and pectin (a soluble fiber that controls bad cholesterol). These are also high in water content, vitamin C and A, and potassium. Watermelon is a delicious fruit, enjoyed by so many, especially in the summer months. Since it contains a good amount of water, summer is the time when it is mostly craved. While we love this fruit, many of us do not know the benefits of consuming watermelon. Many people's assumption of watermelon is that is made up of water and sugar, however, it is actually a nutrient dense food, and packed with essential vitamins and minerals, which help our bodies stay healthy. It reduces risk of heart diseases, produces energy, cleans kidney and is a great source of water which keeps the skin healthy and glowing. The following are some benefits your body will experience just by enjoying watermelon.

Reduces Body Fat

Watermelon is a nutrient dense food, but also supplies a very low caloric intake. With less than 50 calories per cup, it is a perfect guilt free snack. Watermelon also contains something called citrulline. Citrulline is an amino acid which reduces the accumulated fat cells of our body. So, by consuming watermelon, you could also be helping your body naturally reduce its fat stores.

Hydration

When most people think of hydrating their bodies, they think of water. While that is an excellent way of staying hydrated, you can also eat your way to hydration. Watermelon is made up of approximately 92% water, and so while eating it you are also getting a good source of water. Also, the watermelon juice is an excellent source of electrolytes. The high water content flushes out toxins, clears the skin and removes pimples and dark spots.

Kidney Support

Watermelon is a natural diuretic, so it will help the liver process ammonia, which decreases strain on the kidneys when removing excess liquid and toxins from our body.

Muscle and Nerve Support

Watermelon is rich in potassium, which means it is a natural electrolyte which regulates the functioning of nerves and muscles in the body. Potassium controls the nerve excitation and regulates the degree of muscles contraction. When we have the appropriate amount of potassium, our muscles and nerves can function properly.

Supports Heart Health

Lycopene and Arginine are two more nutrients that are found in watermelon, both of which are great for the heart. A study from Purdue University showed lycopene is very effective in protecting cells from damage and can help lower the risk of blood disease. Arginine helps improve blood flow and can reduce hypertension and high blood pressure.

Prevent Cancer

Watermelon contains lycopene, an antioxidant which helps in reducing the risk of prostate, breast, lung, colon and endometrial cancer.

By weight, watermelon is the most consumed melon in the United States. Now we can clearly see why with all of these excellent health benefits, it is the perfect addition to any meal plan.
