Contrary to the belief that eating late night is harmless or helps with sleep, the opposite is true. It is not only important to have dinner early but also choose the right foods to eat before going to bed. Nutritionists and health researchers have proven beyond reasonable doubt that having dinner late at night may have negative effects on an individual’s health. The following are some of the bad effects that eating late at night can result into:
1. Sleep Effects
Eating particular foods for late dinner may deter sleep and cause insomnia. Caffeinated beverages and foods like chocolate, coffee and energy drinks stimulate senses making it difficult for one to sleep. Such foods also have the effect of making an individual feel groggy the next day. Foods high in carbohydrate and sugars also plummet energy levels hence disrupting sleep.
2. Weight Gain
It is highly advisable for one to consume foods rich in nutrients and low in calories especially during night time. Late night consumption of calorie-dense foods eventually leads to residual weight gain. Because of low level of activities at night, the rate of metabolism is comparatively low. Eating junk and oily foods at night means that some of the fats or oils will get accumulated in the body due to the above reason. This may consequently lead to disorders like obesity or weight gain.
3. Acid Reflux and Heartburn
Acid reflux is a condition whereby the stomach acid moves to esophagus after partaking a meal. During acid reflux, one can experience a sensational burning pain in the mid or lower part of the chest. The burning pain is called heartburn and can be a nuisance. Sleeping in bed or lying down after a meal causes acid reflux. Eating acidic, greasy and high-fat foods enhances the risk of acid reflux. Avoiding late night dinner can be a remedy for people prone to heartburn or acid reflux.
